/> As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, there is one thing nearly all modern Americans have in common: we sit all the time. Though our great shift towards computer-based work has done great things for productivity, it has, unfortunately, done terrible things for our health.

From increased risk of heart disease and obesity in the long term, to sharply hampered cholesterol maintenance in the short term, the negative health effects of sitting are starting to weigh heavily against the benefits.

Even the medical field – the greatest advocates and reducing sitting time – is plagued by this new health issue. Though doctors and nurses get plenty of walking time, it usually falls to the secretaries, billers, and coders to do all the sitting. And, as we can see, something has to change.

To read the first part: http://sys-talk.com/inspiration/to-make-the-dream-a-reality-the-walt-disneys-way/

Soon after the completion of The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World,
someone said, “Isn’t it too bad Walt Disney didn’t live to see this?”
Mike Vance, Creative Director at Disney, replied, “He did see it. That’s why it’s here.”

You can even follow @Disney on Twitter and see the sketches made for EPCOT, Tomorrowland at WDW, pictures of Walt showing the concept arts, and read his famous words of wisdom. He did see it in his vision: EPCOT, Tomorrowland, and many more.

Even at the time before he passed away. Hours before, he still spoke to a reporter and let the reporter write his imaginary vision of DisneyWorld and EPCOT on his hospital ceiling while lying in bed. Barely able to speak clearly, he asked the reporter to came closer so that he could whisper it. Such passion, determined to fulfill that dream, and Walt’s belief that one day it will be there even if he couldn’t really see it being built with his own eyes. But in reality, it was already built in his mind on that hospital ceiling wall, and people believed in it also, especially his older brother, Roy (who postponed his retirement and determined to continue Walt’s unfulfilled dreams). That’s why it’s there and still there, even continue growing and expanding, even now. Walt’s death actually pushed his employees more determined toward completing those dreams in honor of Walt.

“I know of no other man whose personality has continued to inspire so many for so many years.”
Charlie Ridgway, Disney Press and Publicity Director

But vision, hope and dreams, also enthusiasm alone won’t make all that appear out of nowhere. Even a dreamer, innovator, inventor, artistic genius like Walt Disney himself was aware of this.

“I’d say it’s been my biggest problem all my life… it’s money. It takes a lot of money to make these dreams come true. “
Walt Disney

Thankfully, Walt was so fortunate to have the support of his beloved older brother, Roy O. Disney. Since he moved to California, his older brother Roy supported him, and helped him most from the financial side. When Walt came up with an idea, he went to his brother and asked him to prepare some capital to finance his ideas and dreams. At the end of the day, “Just get the money for me,” Walt said to his brother.

Roy was a miracle worker himself, much like his younger brother Walt, he almost always came up with the capital Walt required for his dream projects. Some said Walt couldn’t achieve so much without Roy, and vice versa. Walt was the CEO and Roy was the CFO. Walt the dreamer and Roy the financier.

“My business is making people, especially children, happy.”

Walt Disney

Yes, Walt let Roy took care of the funds and capital, so that Walt could focus on his business: making people, especially children happy. His brother, Roy must have loved Walt so much that he understood and also let Walt focus on his dreams, pour all his heart and mind on his ideas. The ability to focus and excel in the things you like doing, and the support of the people you cared most are God-send.

“I could never convince the financiers that Disneyland was feasible, because dreams offer too little collateral.”

Walt Disney

And yes, Roy took care of that part for Walt, too. To invest on something, you must calculate the risks and the return of investment if you want to invest smart. Rarely would-be-investors put their money on something that came out of a dream, especially when someone stated that he wanted to make something completely new like no other in the world. In their point of view the risk is really high. Especially in the theme park business when most theme parks of the time was unclean, not well-maintained and degrade with time. Disney envisioned a theme park that both children and even parents can enjoy, that is clean, entertaining and imbued with Disney’s magic. When you enter the gate, they’ll be transported to a magical land, leaving their daily problems at the gate. Most people predicted that it would become a failure, the dream was too grand to be realized, even if it were to be build, it would required a great amount of money to maintain such large facility.

“People look at me in many ways. They’ve said, ‘The guy has no regard for money.’ That is not true. I have had regard for money. It depends on who’s saying that. Some people worship money as something you’ve got to have piled up in a big pile somewhere. I’ve only thought about money in one way, and that is to do something with it. I don’t think there’s a thing I own that I will ever get the benefit of except through doing things with it.”

Walt Disney

“I knew if this business was ever to get anywhere, if this business was ever to grow, it could never do it by having to answer to someone unsympathetic to its possibilities, by having to answer to someone with only one thought or interest, namely profits. For my idea of how to make profits has differed greatly from those who generally control businesses such as ours. I have blind faith in the policy that quality, tempered with good judgment and showmanship, will win against all odds.”

Walt Disney

That quality that sprung out Walt Disney’s passion for his work made all this possible and success was ensured. While others were skeptical, Roy stood by his younger brother, believed in his dreams, supported and financed Walt’s dreams.

.

“Walt Disney World is a tribute to then philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney and to the talents, the dedication and loyalty of the entire Disney Organization … may Walt Disney World bring joy and inspiration and new knowledge to all who come to this happy place.”

Roy Disney, October 1971, formal opening and dedication of “Walt Disney World”

.

Two months after the opening, in December 20, 1971, Roy Disney passed away because of stroke. Merely two months after he saw his brother’s dream came true.

Roy Oliver Disney was lesser known to most people as his name was eclipsed by the enormous shadow of his younger brother Walt. But his dedication, support and hard work, keeping the company financially stable, providing the means for Walt’s dream projects were equally important to Disney’s success.

Honoring both Walt and Roy Disney, for both their passion and dedication to make millions of children and parents happy.

Very disappointing! Look at this commentary a local newspaper in Indonesia just printed.

“I urge the people not to misuse the fire-dispatcher phone number for pranks. It is very time consuming. Once arrived at the fire location, the fire had already gone wild and big, and would took longer time to handle it,” Vice Mayor of the City of Bandung, Ayi Vivananda.

Too many government officials can only “URGE” the people to do something. You can find the official news HERE (in Bahasa Indonesia). The printed version of the paper got more details on why those prank phone calls can disturb the performance of the fire-fighter in reaching the “real” or “correct” fire location. These pranks elevate the response time of the fire fighter and minimize the chance of the officials in saving other people’s lives.

Normally as government officials “with the power” to do some real good, they don’t need to URGE people to stop these prank calls, especially when it comes down in saving other people’s lives. They should’ve made the right and much-needed REGULATIONS and even clear-cut LAW to govern this and punish all those irresponsible people, risking and endangering other people’s lives.

They should’ve seen our neighbouring countries, when it comes to saving lives and all, give a STERN WARNING in advanced, even punishable by LAW.

“DO NOT PRESS THE BUTTON, EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. MISUSE: FINE $5000.” Very effective, no?

So, please, the government don’t just sit there and “sip” on the people’s money and keep on going mending and stretching regulations for solely for increasing more income to the treasury (of which aren’t clear to where those funds are spent), e.g.: all tax, but no real public service improvement. This is more important as lives are at stakes, dear Sir and Ma’am!

Related to my teammate’s article HERE (in Bahasa Indonesia).

The government has the “power”, the right, and even the OBLIGATION to build the infrastructure to support and help these “life-saving” efforts (in this case, fire disaster).

Should they wait for foreign aids? Oh, come on, IMHO they shouldn’t, they should’ve been self-sufficient. Especially when it comes to their own people’s lives and well-being. They should’ve given more priority on these areas.

No related posts.

How much does it worth?

inspiration

management

price

Stanley Bing

worth

Stanley Bing has said:

You’re worth what they want to pay you. A few years ago, I “invested” in an old copy of Iron Man comics, one from the ’60s. It was in Very Good condition, and had a story line I liked. It was listed in the Comic Bible for about $40, but I got it for $25. I showed it to my then-wife, who looked at it with great dubiosity. “How much did you pay for that?” she asked me. “About 20 bucks!” I said proudly. “And it’s worth $40!”

“It’s only worth $40 if there’s somebody who wants to pay $40 for it,” she said. “Right now, I’d say it’s worth about $20, if that.”

So… whether or not it is priceless or not, depends… What is art?

art (n)

1: the products of human creativity; works of art collectively;
2: the creation of beautiful or significant things;
3: a superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation.

The strong keywords that I’m getting from the definition above are: human creativity, superior skill, learn by study and practice and observation.

“Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you’re generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you don’t make.” - Donald Trump

IMHO, for most cases or problems you’ll face or did face in the business world, there’s no “one-cure” to the perfectly similar diagnosis. I’m not saying that there’s no justifiable scientific method to come up with the solution to the problem. It’s just sometimes the variables are too many and too unpredictable that it requires the “art” from which comes from your skill learned from you studies, experience (your practices and observations).

Yes, you might have studied several business cases when studying for your MBA. Yes, you might have experienced some business cases of your own at work. But that does not mean that you are guaranteed to know the solution to every problem you face in the business world.

“The 1990′s sure aren’t like the 1980′s.” - Donald Trump

One of my lecturers said, “in business, there’s actually no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, it’s just a matter of perspective, as long as you get the job done, then all you have to do next is to convince upper management that the actions you took to get the job done is accountable and taken responsibly.”

“Good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them.” - Paul Hawken

Now, this is an interesting statement, and IMHO that’s another “art” to convince people that your actions are justifiable and for you to defend your actions. As long as the job was done and the task was accomplished, then you can analyze your previous actions were they efficient, effective or not, so that you can improve them on your next assignment in the future. As a matter of fact, all that’s important to the company, in terms of money, is how much money you’ve saved or how much money you’ve wasted in the process.

Mary Parker Follett (1868–1933) defined management as “the art of getting things done through people”.

Basic functions of management: planning, organizing, leading/motivating, and controlling.
Planning includes shaping the vision and mission of the business. This requires future insights and also creativity to shape something out of the blue, that’s creativity. Leading and motivating benefit the most out of the art of leadership, the art of negotiation.

“Leadership: The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” - Dwight D. Eisenhower

There’s so many aspects in these basic functions that can be categorized as art, but I’m not denying that there’s also needs for scientific method to accomplish all these. Mathematics in organizing, statistical methods in controlling, psychological analysis in leading and motivating, and many more.
<p
